Overview

As a five-passenger compact SUV, the 2027 Buick Envision satisfies the basic requirements: competitive infotainment, inoffensive exterior styling, and plenty of passenger and cargo room at a competitive price. But Buicks are supposed to be a cut above, and it's the luxury part of the equation that the Envision struggles with. Though it's tastefully appointed inside, it lacks the upscale feel, material quality, and cohesive execution of segment favorites like the Genesis GV70 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class—cars that the top-spec Envision Avenir trim aspires to compete with.

While that alone isn't a dealbreaker, the Envision's powertrain is. It feels soft and dated relative to rivals. Its 228-horsepower turbo-four was in the hunt when it debuted back in 2021, but the base turbo-four in the current GV70, for example, kicks out 300 ponies. Still, the Envision's smooth ride, roomy cabin, and massive infotainment/instrument screen make it worth a look for buyers who prioritize the basics over performance and can't stretch the budget for the top compact-class SUVs.

Expert Tip: The Envision hasn't changed much in the last few years, so a lightly used model could be a great deal.

C/D Expert TipC/D Expert Tip:

If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engine: 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Transmission: 9-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: all-wheel drive

All Envisions come with the same engine: a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder rated at 228 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are both standard. The Envision is down on power compared to its competition and, as a result, its acceleration trails theirs. There is a Sport driving mode, but even with it engaged, performance remains unexciting. Although it's been a few years since we tested an Envision, the powertrain in the current model remains unchanged.

Nonetheless, as you might expect from a Buick, the Envision’s priority is ride comfort, not driver engagement. On that note, the Envision doesn’t disappoint. This is one relaxed cruiser.

Car value calculator

What's Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

0–60-MPH Times

In Comparison: The Envision is one of the pokiest models in its segment. The Audi Q5 hits 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and the Lincoln Corsair in 6.1 seconds. The Mercedes-Benz GLC300 gets to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while the GV70's base turbo-four hauls it to 60 mph in 5.6.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 1500 pounds

The Envision's 1,500-pound tow rating is just enough for occasional tasks, but this cruiser is not cut out for hard labor.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • EPA City Rating: 22 mpg
  • EPA Highway Rating: 28 mpg

The EPA rates the 2027 Envision for 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg in combined driving. When we get a chance to put the Envision through our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, we'll update this story with results. For more information about the Envision's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

In Comparison: The Mercedes GLC300 earns EPA ratings of 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The Genesis GV70 with the base turbo-four comes in at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The interior is spacious for a compact SUV but doesn’t feel at all luxurious unless you go for the Avenir trim. Even then, the Envision doesn't come across as upscale as its German competition. The base model gets faux leather, while the Sport Touring and Avenir have the real thing, the latter offering heated and ventilated front seats and a massaging driver's seat. The Sport Touring gets heated seats when you add the Comfort and Convenience package.

Second Row: Rear passengers enjoy a comparatively spacious cabin and comfortable seating, at least for two—things get tight with three. As in front, the design lacks the panache of the segment's best.

Cargo Capacity: The Envision is undeniably practical; it's an SUV, after all. In our testing, the compact Buick was able to swallow 9 carry-on suitcases with its rear seats up and 21 with them folded flat.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 30-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: 9-speaker Bose stereo

When it comes to connectivity, the Envision doesn’t disappoint. All models come with a head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM satellite radio, in-dash navigation, a nine-speaker Bose stereo, four USB ports, and active noise-cancellation. But the main attraction is its large 30-inch display, which houses both the driver's instrument cluster and the infotainment system, with driver data and infotainment each occupying approximately 50 percent of the screen real estate.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Buick offers plenty of driver-assistance features as standard on the Envision, including an adaptive cruise control system with a lane-centering feature, automatic high-beam headlamps, and a 360-degree exterior camera system.

Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature

For more information about the Envision's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Buick's standard warranty package matches that of many rivals, but the Envision's included single service visit pales in comparison with the plans of the BMW X3 and the Jaguar F-Pace, both of which provide far lengthier terms for complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: first visit
